Epunk is the more brand friendly name for controversial internet based punk rock genre Incelcore, which has become as synonymous with the genre as its first coined and more widely used descriptor. Epunk is defined by its lo-fi pop-punk meets hardcore sound and was made popular by the music of Negative XP, previously known as Shooter. The lyrics most often surround topics of social isolation, mental illness, and a hatred for wider society and women. The songs are often satirical in nature and thusly can become quite edgy in their expression of humor. Although none of the artists themselves are involved in any sort of violence they sing songs about longing for a sugar-glazed 1950s that never existed and wanting to tear down the world they view rejected them in order to bring those good old days back through force. 4chan, the popular anonymous image board site is the origin of much of the genre’s internal jargon and themes.
